Ornament crystal castles lyrics
This isn’t to say that the band is completely done with some of its old tricks though. The entire album straddles this line between the two extremes and does so with a kind of grace one might not expect of a band like Crystal Castles. While other tracks like ‘Fleece’ and ‘Sadist’ show the ugliness of abuse with screeching production and lyrics that read like an abusers last attempt to get someone to stay with them. Tracks like ‘Frail’ and ‘Enth’ bring across a feeling of finding freedom from one’s abuser, with building synth leads and huge a vocal. With Frances voice and lyrics given a more prominent place in the mix, making the message clear to interpretation. This empathetic look into the evil we all can muster makes for a far more nuanced listen compared to the band’s previous work. However, where the band’s last record squarely focused on the abusers Amnesty (I) takes a far more interesting approach by highlighting how we are all capable of being victims as well. Instead of burying her like he did with Glass (especially prevalent on the bands last two albums) Kath allowed Frances to create her own voice and, as ‘Frail’ and the rest of Amnesty (I) shows, it’s a voice worth paying attention to.Īiming down the same thematic style as their previous release, the new record finds the band once again diving into the poisoned underbelly of society to discuss the topics of abuse and neglect. Unlike the last few years of the band’s work, ‘Frail’ put the vocals in the forefront with a greater emphasis on what was being said. The track hit similar notes that the band had struck before Kath’s usual skittery goth-rave production was as bombastic as ever, but it was Frances vocal that showcased the first real change in sound for the band. And with their critically acclaimed third album, (III), two years behind them it was hard to see how the band could bounce back.īut only a year later we got the first taste of the newest incarnation of the band, now fronted by vocalist Edith Frances, with the song ‘Frail’.

The entire incident was filled with the type of dark undercurrents of abuse and the ‘evils of man’ which made up much of the band’s music to that point.

The band’s producer Ethan Kath attempted to undersell Glass’ influence on the bands and it’s popularity while Glass maintained that she had been the spark to many of the bands biggest hits. Losing one half of the creative team behind the band was bad enough, but the split was messy. When Alice Glass left Crystal Castles in 2014 it seemed as though the end had come for the Toronto based synth-pop duo. The duo debuted more new material in early 2016, and Crystal Castles' fourth album Amnesty appeared that August.By Jake Doolin album, album review, Amnesty i, Crystal Castles, edith frances, ethan kath, fiction records Another new song, "Deicide," surfaced that July, a few months before the new lineup's live debut at the Soundswild Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa that November. Glass left the project in October 2014 to pursue a solo career in April 2015, Kath resurfaced with a new Crystal Castles track, "Frail," which featured new vocalist Edith Frances. For 2012's more streamlined III, the duo decamped to Warsaw, where they recorded direct to tape, eschewing any computer-assisted recording. The duo returned in 2010 with another self-titled album when it leaked onto the Internet in late April of that year, the band released it digitally soon after, with a physical release following that May. Tours with the Presets and Metric in 2007 set the stage for the release of Crystal Castles' self-titled debut album, which Last Gang released early in 2008.

Kath and Glass worked on their own songs and also honed their remixing skills, tweaking songs for Klaxons as well as GoodBooks, Uffie, Health, and Bloc Party. "Alice Practice" was released as a limited-edition 7" in summer 2006 on Merok Records, also home to Klaxons its 500-copy run sold out in three days. One of the songs the pair recorded, "Alice Practice," was something of an accident: it was intended to be a demo of Glass testing out a microphone, but its presence on MySpace piqued record labels' interest. When Kath collaborated with singer Alice Glass on some songs in spring 2005, Crystal Castles' lineup was complete.

Kath got the moniker from the name of She-Ra's dwelling in the He-Man and Masters of the Universe cartoon series it's also the name of a 1983 Atari video game, which is oddly appropriate, considering that one component of the band's distinctive sound comes from a keyboard modified with an Atari 5200 sound chip. Fusing lo-res electronic noise and pop hooks so effortlessly that it can seem accidental, Crystal Castles began as producer/multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath's solo project in late 2003.
